So What'cha Want? on the Vinyl Version

This song was written at a time when the Beastie’s were going through a rough time, Russell Simmons owed them money for the first album Licensed to Ill and this would be their second album after leaving Def Jam. The song is about telling def jam that they will, go out on their own and take their chance with another label (capital) and make the Beastie Boys bigger and better than def jam ever could have ever imagine.

The second album Paul’s Boutique was way ahead of its time production wise but was not well received. The Beastie Boys were thought to be a one hit wonder that was over.

Check your head was released in 1992 and was certified double Platinum in the US and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200.

The band returned to their hardcore punk roots for this album. The addition of instruments and the harder rock sound mixed with turntables, could be considered a precursor to the nu metal of music that came out in the later half of the 90’s

And this could also be considered one of the biggest “diss tracks” of all time because this is nothing but the Beasties telling Russell Simmons and Rick Ruban, that the Beasties Boys are more than capable than doing bigger and better on their own.
