The Waiting on the Vinyl Version

This was released as the lead single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ fourth album, Hard Promises. At the time Tom Petty was so popular his record label wanted to charge $1 more for the LP than the standard $8.98, but they backed down after he considered naming the album “$8.98”

Tom said this song took a long time to write. He thinks he got the idea for the name when he was up late watching Tv and he heard something Janis Joplin said on television when she played on the Dick Cavette show and talked about going back to her home town of Port Author Texas to attend her 10 year high school reunion that gave him the idea for the title, which broke way for the chorus, but Tom had a very difficult time piecing together the rest of the song.

This song is about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true.

It’s a very optimistic song because it talks about achieving your goals, living your dreams and even finding love. The song reminds the listener, no matter how hard it gets, it’s gonna get better if you just wait it out.
