This song was written by 80’s super producer Mutt Lange, he wrote the song in the ’70s and wanted Don Henley to record it but it ended up going to Dobie Gray who released it in 1979 on his self-titled album, the song got little attention. he turned it into more of a disco love song than a ballad.
The Dobie Gray version of this song is way more upbeat and happy song. Gray simply sings about being smitten and filled with desire It for lovely woman. It completely skips the hitchhiker/love child storyline.
In the Heart version of the song Ann Wilson sings about picking up a hitchhiker on a dark and stormy night. She takes the soaking wet stranger to what she describes as a hotel she is all too familiar with and has her way with him. The two strangers have a night of unbridled passion when Ann sings
We made magic that night.
Oh, he did everything right
He brought the woman out of me,
So many times, easily
When it’s over we find out that the woman had the intention of getting pregnant this whole time she escapes the hotel room before daybreak and leaves a note that says:
“I am the flower you are the seed”
We walked in the garden
We planted a tree
Don’t try to find me,
Please don’t you dare
Just live in my memory,
You’ll always be there
In the third verse, she encounters him again. It’s been almost a year, Ann is walking with her husband as we learn she was married the whole time. The couple is walking with a young child that was clearly fathered by this stranger, in the lyrics Ann Sings
Then it happened one day,
We came round the same way
You can imagine his surprise
When he saw his own eyes
When her one night stand and the father of the child she’s holding, approaches her happy family. Ann pleads with the man not let her secret out, Explaining she is love with her husband but he could never give her the one thing that lonely hitchhiker could, that one rainy night. An evening of pure passion and the child she always wanted.
