43 years ago today, November 25, 1976 the original lineup of The Band performed together for the last time, and they did so in a glorious way, by celebrating their music with their peers and friends at a final concert now known as The Last Waltz. What happened at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco that night, was one of those rare magical moments that still stands strong 43 years later. Ronnie Hawkins, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Van Morrisons and dozens of others were on hand to perform, and the event was captured on film by Martin Scorsese. 2 years later the film The Last Waltz would be released in 1978, the film / documentary is still being hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made…. next to Woodstock. I remember in my youth listening to my father’s album version of the Last Waltz for hours on end, and specifically playing Up On Cripple Creek over and over again. The song still stands as one of my favourites and always brings back good memories when I hear it… check out the concert version below.
