Metric is Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott Key. They have spent over 20 years together in creative partnership – a rare feat for any band. From their debut album Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, to their 9th and most recent release, Formentera II– Metric have been breaking boundaries with their own distinct sound and remarkable body of work. The genre-defying and genre-defining band started playing together in NYC in 2001 and have gone on to receive multiple music industry honors across their 8 studio albums including two Juno Awards for Alternative Album of the Year, have garnered more than ½ billion streams across their catalog, and toured extensively around the world. The band’s expansive career has seen them collaborate with late rock legend Lou Reed, who sang on the band’s track “The Wanderlust” on their 2012 album Synthetica, to inspiring movie characters, where future Academy Award-winner Brie Larson, sang Metric’s song “Black Sheep” in the 2010 comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. 2023 marks the band’s 20th anniversary of their debut album, 2003’s Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, but if their latest album is any indication, “they’ve still got plenty of gas in the tank” (NPR).
Joining Metric is Canadian artists the Sam Roberts band.
Critically acclaimed and relentlessly inventive Canadian indie rockers Metric are inviting fans around the world to join them virtually for a one-night-only hometown concert livestream, airing exclusively on Veeps on June 6 at 8:30PM ET. The show — broadcast live from Toronto’s 15,000-capacity Budweiser Stage — will feature the band performing their 2009 breakthrough album Fantasies in full, alongside other fan favorites.
Of the upcoming show, Emily Haines of Metric said: “We’re thrilled to have people from all over the world join us virtually for this very special hometown performance of Fantasies in Toronto. It’s going to be a romantic, nostalgic evening for all. Wherever you may be, we’d love to have you there with us.”
Widely considered one of the most influential indie albums of its time, Fantasies includes anthems like “Help I’m Alive,” “Gimme Sympathy,” and “Gold Guns Girls.” The album was a creative breakthrough for Metric, introducing the bold mix of synth-driven textures, lyrical intensity, and melodic precision that would come to define their sound, and which the band has continued to evolve in surprising and uncompromising ways.
Metric’s commitment to artistic independence and timeless songwriting has cemented their status as one of the most essential and forward-thinking rock bands of the last two decades.
Since forming in Toronto in 1998, the group — comprising Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, Joshua Winstead, and Joules Scott Key — has amassed a loyal global following, building an untouchable catalog across nine studio albums without ever signing to a major label.
Their most recent release, Formentera II (MMI / Thirty Tigers), closes an 18-song cycle that began with 2022’s Formentera, and stands among their most boundary-pushing and critically celebrated work to date.
