On Friday, May 31st, The Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre and Leap Peterborough will be hosting the 2nd Annual Nogojiwanong Reconciliation Gathering 10 am to 7 pm at Confederation Park, in Peterborough-Nogojiwanong. In the case of rain, the backup location will be the Peterborough Armouries, west of Confederation Park. This Youth Program and Community Celebration commemorates the 4th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Calls to Action.
This annual free event provides an opportunity for youth and the wider community to learn about Truth and Reconciliation through building relationships that highlight Indigenous Knowledge. Student workshops are from 10 am to 2 pm and the public is welcome to participate in a Drum Circle from Noon – 1 pm with special guests, including D.N.A. Stage, Red Path Singers & Dancers, Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre Drum, Hiawatha Youth Dancers, and Curve Lake Youth Singers & Dancers. The community program from 3 to 7 pm is open to all and includes a workshop, potluck, and music celebration featuring the Dewe’iganag Nagamog Singers, Missy Knott, Janet McCue, Suzanne Smoke, Hilary Wear, Taylor Merrick, Irish Millie, and Jacques Graveline.
Some of the students workshops include: ‘Our Relationships with Land and Water’ by Kawartha World Issues Centre & TRACKS Oshkwazin Indigenous Youth Leadership Program, ‘Adventures in Understanding Map Game’ with Glen Caradus, (Camp Kawartha/Rotary Peterborough-Kawartha), ‘Building Relationships and Wellness’ by Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, ‘Gender Journeys’ (CMHA), and The Kawartha Truth and Reconciliation Quilt. There will be opportunities to meet Indigenous Singers, Hand drummers, and Dancers from the region, as well as Artists, including Beading with Kathy, Like It R.Knott, Portraits By Rae, and The Suns & One Moon. The Gathering will also offer a variety of information booths and vendors.
Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre and Leap Peterborough invited Indigenous organizations and their allies to help organize this event together. The Gathering is supported by a variety of organizations and donors such as Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, Leap Peterborough, KWIC, Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, Peterborough Armouries, City of Peterborough, Nish-Tees, PVNCCDSB, KPRDSB, PACE@PCVS, Emmanuel United Church, Public Energy, OPIRG, DBIA, Peterborough Inn and Suites, and KawarthaNOW.
