This annual event provides an opportunity to honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never made it home, and acknowledge the lasting impacts of the Residential School system on Indigenous Peoples, families, and communities.
Orange Shirt Day began as an Indigenous grassroots movement and has grown into a National Day of Remembrance, reflection, education, and reconciliation. Participants will have the opportunity to gather in community while listening to Indigenous drumming, witness and honour healing, participate in ceremony, learn from Elders, Knowledge Carriers, community leaders, and organizations committed to advancing truth and reconciliation.
Community agencies and organizations will also host interactive displays, activities, teachings, and educational opportunities throughout the event highlighting the work they do to progress truth and reconciliation.
Event programming will include:
- Traditional Welcome and Tobacco Ceremony led by Knowledge Carrier Semaa Kwe (Kathy MacLeod-Beaver)
- Critical reflection on Land Acknowledgements presented on behalf of the Urban Indigenous Working Group
- The Orange Shirt Day Story presented by Knowledge Carrier Kim Lamothe
- Greetings and reflections from Indigenous and community leaders
- Big Drum, hand drumming, and jingle dancing
- Interactive community organization and agency booths
- Opportunities for education, reflection, and community connection
We are encouraging community to reuse the Orange Water bottles from previous UIWG events. Participants can be entered into a draw to win a gift box, with three winners chosen after the event’s important parts.
About the Nogojiwanong Urban Indigenous Working Group
The Nogojiwanong Urban Indigenous Working Group is a collaborative network of Indigenous organizations, community members, community agencies, healthcare partners, educational institutions, and municipal representatives working together to strengthen Indigenous wellness, cultural connection, community engagement, and reconciliation efforts throughout the Peterborough region.
